Little Falls approves $98,812 federal grant to update firefighters' turnout gear

The Little Falls Township Council on Nov. 10 authorized acceptance of a federal Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) worth $98,812.38 to help replace and upgrade firefighter turnout gear.
Mayor Dan Ando told the council the funds came from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and "this is funds that we can add to our budget here so that we can then expend those funds," and said the grant is expected to be used to buy jackets, pants, helmets, boots and gloves for the fire department.
Council approved the resolution as part of a motion to adopt resolutions A through D (moved by Councilman Venturi; second by Councilman Murphy). The clerk recorded affirmative roll-call votes from Councilmember Murphy, Councilmember Habitz, Councilmember Venturi and Council President Scoba.
At the meeting councilmembers said a full set of turnout gear can cost several thousand dollars; speakers estimated per-set costs between about $3,500 and $5,000. Council members noted prior grants have helped the township replace expired gear, and that the new award will offset taxpayer cost for equipment purchases.
The resolution adds the grant award to the township budget and directs staff to proceed with procurement from approved vendors or co-op agreements where appropriate.
