Duarte schools earn top PBIS honors; board spotlights winter scholar‑athletes

The Duarte Unified Board used part of its meeting to honor schools that earned state recognition for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and to celebrate winter‑season scholar athletes.
Naila Othman introduced the PBIS recognitions and invited Dr. Resnick from the Los Angeles County Office of Education to help present awards. Dr. Resnick said Duarte schools earned two of the state’s highest PBIS honors after multiple years of implementing tier‑one through tier‑three practices that support student behavior and success.
"We are very proud of the partnership that we have with you," Dr. Resnick told the board. He called out Beardsley Dual Language Academy for Gold recognition and Royal Oaks and Valleyview Academy of Technology for Platinum recognition, and asked coaches and teams to join the stage for photos.
Later, Mr. Haro recognized winter scholar athletes and league champions across Duarte High and league programs, naming individual honorees such as Isabella Woo, Jason Velasquez, Selena Banuelos and others for scholar‑athlete awards, all‑league honors, and MVP distinctions. The board applauded student achievements and thanked coaches and families.
The district also used the recognition time to acknowledge principals, directors and management who support PBIS and athletics across sites.
What happens next: The district will continue PBIS implementation and showcase awardees at future events; coaching and athletic program leaders said they will build on this recognition during offseason planning and student recruitment.
