Rutherford County names new DSS director, defers opioid proposals and authorizes nuisance action at Forest City address

After a closed session, the Rutherford County Board of Commissioners announced several formal actions: the appointment of Tiffany Dodd as director of the Department of Social Services, a deferral of opioid settlement project proposals, and a resolution authorizing civil action to abate an alleged public nuisance at a Forest City address.

Appointment: A motion to appoint Tiffany Dodd as the new DSS director carried unanimously by voice vote after the closed session. The board congratulated her on the appointment; no additional personnel details were discussed in open session.

Opioid settlement proposals deferred: Earlier in the meeting a commissioner moved to defer consideration of proposed opioid settlement fund project proposals to a future meeting to allow more time for review; that motion passed by voice vote. Several public commenters had urged the board to ensure settlement funds meaningfully address housing and recovery services and to increase transparency and accountability for grantees.

Nuisance resolution: The board approved a resolution authorizing civil action under North Carolina General Statute Chapter 19 to abate a public nuisance at 482 Morning Star Lake Road in Forest City. The resolution, offered at the request of the sheriff and recommended by the Alcohol Law Enforcement Division, authorizes the chairman, county attorney, and sheriff’s office to institute civil proceedings and execute necessary instruments to enjoin continued nuisance conditions.
