Geneva board keeps final say on primary instructional materials after debate

At the Jan. 12 policy session, Geneva CUSD 304 members discussed Policy 6210’s definition of 'primary instructional materials' and whether the superintendent should be given sole authority to approve non-primary instructional materials.
Staff explained the spring process by which the Department of Learning and Teaching brings resource lists to the board for display and approval. Members noted that teacher committees often spend multiple years vetting resources, and the board’s eventual vote has prompted useful community presentations and conversations.
Several board members said they would be reluctant to remove the board’s final approval role for primary materials because it fosters community engagement and gives the vote more weight. The committee agreed to retain the existing language that keeps the board as the final approver for textbooks and primary instructional resources and to use policy options later if capacity or needs change.
No formal motion to change the approval authority passed during the meeting; staff will continue to present resources following the current schedule and process.
