Committee defers drug-and-alcohol workplace policy pending attorney clarification on 'on-call' definition

During the April 13 policy meeting the Geneva CUSD 304 committee deferred Policy 550, a proposed update to the district’s drug- and alcohol-free workplace policy, until attorneys provide clarifying language about who qualifies as an 'on-call' employee.
Staff explained that several districts are asking the same question and that the district’s lawyers are preparing one or two additional sentences to make the policy unambiguous. A committee member asked whether the sticking point was a timeframe; staff replied the core issue is identifying which employee groups are covered under an 'on-call' designation so implementation is consistent across job classes.
The committee agreed to hold Policy 550 for the next policy meeting and not forward it to the full board until the attorney-provided clarification is included.
