Local agencies report on seniors and disability services; Wellise and Spark highlight programming and community engagement

Two local service providers presented to the board during the May 26 meeting.
Cara Lorenz Goings, CEO of Wellise Services, reviewed the agencys contract report covering Older Americans Act spending through April 2026, noted the multi-year plan for FY20272029 and urged commissioners to promote the community needs survey open through June 15. She described an infrastructure grant that funded lower-level renovations in Brooklyn and said Wellise serves Jackson, Lenawee and Hillsdale counties; she cited Hillsdale-specific allocations included in the packet and explained the agency maintains a 60-day operating reserve as a minimum practice.
Later, Tammy Ryan, executive director of Spark, introduced staff and participants who presented the programs photography, gardening, cooking and social groups for adults with developmental disabilities. Staff described a program van that provides transport across the county, volunteer support from college students, and ways participants publish and sell calendars of their photography. Several participants spoke briefly about how the program helps with independence, socialization and skills such as cooking and photography.
Board members thanked the presenters and encouraged commissioners and staff to attend upcoming events: Wellises annual celebration and a local focus group for the multi-year plan, and Sparks program events including a June benefit and community exhibits.
