The Redondo Beach City Youth Commission met to approve routine agenda items, present commemorative coins to graduating youth commissioners and review staff updates on teen services.
Staff led roll call and noted the absence of Chair Reeds before commissioners approved the order of the agenda and the consent calendar by voice votes. Commissioners also approved the minutes from the May 7, 2026 meeting by voice vote.
City staff presented 'City Coins' to graduating Youth Commission members and invited each senior forward for a photograph, thanking them for their service. "We really do appreciate all of your hard work and feedback in launching some teen initiatives during your time here," a staff member said during the presentation.
In staff reports, commissioners were congratulated for a recent presentation to the city council, and staff announced that applications are open for up to four Youth Commission seats for the next school year. "Applications can be found on the city website and should be submitted no later than Thursday, June 25," staff said. Staff also said the teen center will operate summer/off-day hours from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. and referred commissioners to the posted calendar on the commission's social media; staff named Kelly as a contact for questions.
A commissioner proposed adding public, park-style games — including ping-pong tables, mini-basketball and badminton — at Redondo Beach public spaces such as the Pier and the Riviera to encourage community use. "I was just curious if, for example, the ping-pong one, it was implemented — is there a way that we can maybe do something like that for the Redondo Beach Pier or Riviera?" Commissioner Oscan said. Other commissioners suggested the features could be permanent or support informal tournaments and discussed whether such additions could be included in future budget recommendations.
Staff said they would look into the steps required to implement such amenities and confirm whether previously submitted budget recommendations still allow for those items. Commissioners also noted that the commission has implemented a tutoring program that pairs Redondo Union High School students with middle school students for peer tutoring.
There were no public commenters present in person, by Zoom or by e-comment during the public participation portion of the meeting. A motion to adjourn was made, seconded and approved by voice vote; the meeting concluded thereafter.
