County budget staff presented a comprehensive amendment to the fiscal-year 2026 county budget and commissioners previewed contested items for the FY27 appropriations resolution during the June 1 Montgomery County commission meeting.
Mrs. Wheeler, the presenter for the county, described Resolution 2662 as the last opportunity to amend the FY26 budget. She outlined several revenue adjustments that offset expense changes, including a $250,000 increase in hotel-motel tax receipts and an $826,000 increase in fees received from county officials. She described grant and state revenue adjustments, payroll reallocations to correct rounding and reassign personnel to more appropriate object codes, and transfers between funds to cover capital needs. On expenditures she noted increases such as $420,000 for jail medical and $320,000 for inmate food, and an adjustment to the capital projects fund to add $350,000 for a court complex generator and $500,000 for water-heater and elevator work at the public safety complex. Wheeler also explained ARPA fund recognition rules and a restatement of beginning balances.
Separately, Mr. Taylor presented Resolution 2661 to amend the school budget with line-item changes and additional funding for paid parental leave and a Junior Solar Sprint grant; the transcript records the dollar figures he read but contains internal inconsistencies in the totals presented (see audit).
As commissioners previewed upcoming action on Resolution 26610 (FY27 appropriations), Commissioner Smith said he will move next week to amend the proposed budget by removing two part-time EMS positions and adding one full-time EMA field operator position without equipment. Commissioner Bill said he intends to propose cutting $75,000 allocated for the Arts and Heritage Development Council, noting the commission had not funded nonprofits in prior years.
Multiple routine grant acceptances, lease renewals and tourism-related appropriations were presented for consent, and the planning commission had previously recommended approval for the road-abandonment items heard earlier. The meeting minutes do not record final votes on the FY26 amendments or the FY27 appropriation resolution during the June 1 session; commissioners signaled that several items will return for formal action next week.
