Ocean Shores emergency manager schedules July 21 town hall, posts preparedness tools online

Mike, the city’s emergency management representative, told the Public Safety Committee on May 19 that he has posted a household water calculator and other preparedness guidance to the city’s CivicPlus site and will hold a public town hall on July 21 focused on tsunami and earthquake readiness.
“I emphasized self-preparedness,” Mike said, describing a recent radio spot and the water calculator that lets residents estimate how many gallons they should store for 3, 5, 7 or 30 days based on household size, pets and medical needs.
Mike said he submitted the city’s storm-ready and tsunami-ready applications to the U.S. Department of Commerce to maintain eligibility for Department of Commerce grants and that work on a continuity-of-operations plan is underway; the plan will be rolled up to FEMA through the county by the end of the year. He told the committee he plans to simplify technical planning documents into a plain-language presentation and infographics so residents can more easily understand evacuation routes and decisions about which bridges to avoid during an evacuation.
He also encouraged a neighbor-helping-neighbor approach to disaster response and suggested county partners (including communications and state patrol) join the final July 4 planning sessions to improve coordination.
The emergency management representative said the town hall will be nontechnical: a PowerPoint and open discussion to set realistic expectations about what city staff can provide during tsunami and earthquake incidents. City officials asked staff to circulate enrollment instructions for the city’s new notification system so council can share sign-up information with residents at the next council meeting.
The committee did not take any formal action; the emergency management office will announce the town-hall location and share sign-up details for CivicPlus alerts in the city’s notification channels.
