Beacon Falls 250th Committee lays out May kickoff, parade and town events

Peter Betkoski, a member of the Beacon Falls 250th Committee, called the special meeting to order at 7:03 p.m. on Feb. 4 and said he would take the lead coordinating the town’s 250th activities through the committee.
Library representatives told the committee they had discussed an outdoor movie night with Parks and Rec and recommended Hamilton as the kickoff film on May 23, with a rain date of May 30. "We spoke with Parks and Rec about having an outdoor movie night — we decided Hamilton would be a good choice as a kickoff," said Elizabeth Setaro-Posick, a committee member. Priscilla Cretella offered help with food, and Kerri Vardon suggested adding karaoke or theater-group elements and putting an RSVP QR code on flyers to estimate crowd size.
Committee members also discussed signage and decorative flags for Main Street and other locations. "When you put the flags up, they should be up by Memorial Day," said Richard Minnick, who spoke during the discussion. Ben Catanzaro said the committee will handle sign boards on the median.
On larger event coordination, Kyle Brennan said the parade is set for the 27th at 5 p.m. and that the SAR will participate. The committee discussed including the 250th in the firemen’s carnival and agreed to work on a unifying theme; Lisa DeGeorge suggested "Beacon Falls Celebrates America’s 250th" as a possible logo/name. Priscilla Cretella proposed a fall block party on Sept. 19 to close the year’s festivities.
Brennan reminded the committee that $25,000 had been set aside in the current fiscal year for 250th projects and asked the group to clarify how funds should be allocated across events. Betkoski said he was trying to reserve some of that money for the Rimmon Schoolhouse stabilization project while seeking donations from the Legion Club and local businesses.
The meeting concluded with a motion to adjourn made by Gerard Smith, seconded by Michael Krenesky; the committee voted all ayes and adjourned at 8:06 p.m.
