Fayette County awards $431,294.82 Thin-Lift Flexgard road preservation contract

The Fayette County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved awarding Contract #26089-B, a Thin-Lift Flexgard overlay system, to Blount Construction Company, Inc. for $431,294.82 at its March 12 meeting.
Public Works Director Phil Mallon told the board that Thin-Lift Flexgard is a pavement-preservation system that "combined hot-mix asphalt and polymer modified asphalt without the use of reclaimed asphalt pavement" and is expected to extend road life by preventing cracking and rutting. Mallon said approximately 1.75 miles of roadway will be treated under the contract, including Hood Road south of Trilith and roads in the Bonaventure Estates subdivision.
Chairman Lee Hearn asked whether the project’s performance would be properly monitored to ensure the county is using effective preservation methods; no change to the award was made during the meeting. Vice Chairman Edward Gibbons moved to award the contract and Commissioner Charles W. Oddo seconded; the motion passed 5-0.
The contract was presented as a pavement-preservation investment rather than a full reconstruction; the board did not identify additional contingency funding or a revised maintenance schedule at the meeting. The county will proceed with the contract award under the terms approved by the board.
