District staff details 2024 ELA standards rollout as board asks about personalization and assessments

District literacy leaders presented the new 2024 English language arts standards to the Beaufort County Board of Education on Oct. 1, telling the board the district is now in full implementation for instruction and assessment.
'We are in full implementation of the 2024 ELA standards for instruction and assessment,' said Miss Murray, the district's director of literacy, describing updated strands, vertical articulation documents and educator insights published by the South Carolina Department of Education.
The presentation emphasized four strands (foundations of literacy; applications of reading; research; written and oral communication), updated indicators especially in early grades, and support materials intended to clarify grade-level expectations. Staff said curriculum maps have been revised kindergarten through 12th grade and that professional development and literacy coaching will support consistency of implementation.
Board members asked how the standards allow for personalized learning. 'Because it is for children, it is complex,' Murray replied, and described teacher structures such as professional learning communities, coaching and curriculum maps that allow differentiated instructional pathways toward common standards.
Members also asked how the standards compare to high-performing systems globally and how assessments will align. Staff said state standards are built to support stronger outcomes on ACT and SAT measures and that the state's testing program (SC Ready and field tests) has been revised to include field-test questions aligned to the new standards, including new writing assessments.
The board asked staff to develop communications and training through a BCSD 'university' and the communications department to help parents and community members understand the standards and how they will be taught. Staff indicated additional presentations are planned that will include science standards and more granular grade-level exercises for board and community audiences.
The presentation concluded with appreciation from the board for the visual materials and the district's plans for outreach.
