Whitpain Shade Tree Commission schedules April 26 native tree giveaway, seeks volunteers and materials

The Whitpain Shade Tree Commission scheduled its annual Native Tree Giveaway for Sunday, April 26, 2026, and members outlined volunteer and logistics needs at the March 4 meeting.
Township liaison Malcolm Smith said he will reach out to volunteer organizations that helped last year — Boy Scouts, St Helena’s Baseball Team, Blue Bell Rotary and the Wissahickon High School Key Club — and will report back at the next meeting. Chair Mark Eberle said tree captains will need at least six volunteers each and that the ideal is "10–15 volunteers." Edgar David will coordinate the inventory of tree species; Vince Marrocco will write species summaries after David confirms the list. Mr. David will also prepare signage for the giveaway.
Andrew P. Meehan confirmed the mulch order and delivery and reported the commission has ordered up to 225 bags of mulch at likely the same cost as last year. Malcolm Smith will inventory remaining deer protection supplies and order more if needed. Student member Albert He will design a flyer for the giveaway and will seek advertising in the high school newsletter. Commission members discussed adding survey feedback and possible vendor tables; EAC participation will be requested and Mr. Smith will confirm whether food/coffee trucks or nonprofit vendor tables are allowed by township policy.
