Smyth County proposes raising real estate tax to $0.69 per $100; residents warn of hardship for seniors
Summary

Assistant County Administrator—Development Clegg Williams read the advertised proposal to change Smyth County’s property tax schedule for fiscal year 2026–27, which includes raising the real estate rate from $0.59 to $0.69 per $100 of assessed value.
The notice cited the relevant Code of Virginia provisions and explained where the full text of the proposal could be reviewed. Chair Charlie Atkins opened the public hearing.
During public comment, Dr. Charles Wassum said he was concerned about how increased taxes would affect older and disabled residents and urged frugality and debt reduction. Resident Billy Stamper said family members had been unable to retire because of tax increases and warned of long-term impacts. Chair Atkins closed the hearing.
Why it matters: Raising the real estate tax levy would increase annual tax bills countywide, with particular concern among commenters for fixed‑income and elderly residents. The hearing places these concerns on the public record as the board continues budget deliberations.
