Gig Harbor Boat Shop details programs, fundraiser and plans to repower veteran boat

Matea Eastland, marketing director for the Gig Harbor Boat Shop, reported to the council on March 9 that use of the Boatyard House and the boat shop’s community programs has grown, and she highlighted upcoming events and needs.
Eastland said the Boatyard House is available for public rental and for boat‑shop programming, and that community rentals have roughly doubled since 2023. She announced the Boat Shop’s annual fundraiser will be May 15 at 6 p.m., and that crew school is scheduled for April 13–16. Eastland also described recurring programs including summer camps, maritime mentorship, community boat restoration and a Northwest Fleet photography project that will be launched online.
Council members asked logistical questions. Council member Ekberg asked when summer camp registration would open; Eastland said a new summer camp director is being finalized and registration should open in the next two weeks. Council member Martin asked about longer‑term needs; Eastland said the historic boat Veteran will likely require repowering or engine replacement to remain reliable and useful for charters and youth programs.
