Gig Harbor honors retiring officer Fred Douglas; Weston King sworn in as lieutenant

The Gig Harbor City Council and Police Department honored Lieutenant Fred Douglas on Feb. 23 as he retires after 28 years with the department. Chief Trey Federici presented Douglas with a shadow box and announced that, in recognition of his service, Douglas would retire with the rank of deputy chief and received the Chief Kelly Busey Distinguished Service Medal.
Chief Federici praised Douglas’s “skill, dependability and selflessness,” saying those qualities helped build the department. Federici asked Douglas to join him at the podium and presented the award and a symbolic promotion.
Douglas addressed the council and attendees with a personal reflection on his career. “It’s been an amazing ride,” he said, recounting his start after active duty in 1997 and noting the department’s growth from roughly a dozen officers to 26 commissioned officers. He thanked family and colleagues and shared an on‑duty anecdote that highlighted community assistance.
Later in the meeting, Weston King was introduced and sworn in as a lieutenant. Chief Federici noted King’s prior service, including time in Utah law enforcement, seven years with the U.S. Air Marshals and 16 years with the U.S. Office of Inspector General. King recited the oath of office and family members pinned his badge.
The council announced a short reception to follow the meeting to honor the officers.
