Council names 0.6-mile loop in Tualacuff Conservation Area the Richard H. Shaw Loop Trail

The Gig Harbor City Council on April 13 approved Resolution 13-55 to name a 0.6-mile loop in phase 2 of the Tualacuff Conservation Area the Richard H. Shaw Loop Trail.
Parks Manager Jennifer Harrow told the council the city acquired the property in 2022 using city funds and Pierce County conservation-futures money. Harrow said one previous owner, Richard H. Shaw, had negotiated a provision in the purchase agreement requiring a portion of the park be named for him; a naming agreement executed in January 2023 formalized that requirement.
Harrow said the trail is ready to open once signage is ordered and that the naming does not obligate the city to any additional naming rights or future commitments. She said the Shaw family and former business partners support the naming. Council member Rodenberg asked whether the namesake was the same person for whom Shaw Park is named; Harrow said it is a different individual.
Council member Martin moved to adopt the resolution; Council member Aman Amman seconded. The council voted 6–0 in favor. Harrow said staff will quickly order signs and make the trail available to the public.
The resolution fulfills the city’s contractual naming obligation and advances opening of the new trail segment; no budget appropriation beyond signage was announced at the meeting.
