Gig Harbor Civil Service Commission: Department fully staffed after three hires; lieutenant to retire

Shannon Costanti, civil service secretary for the Gig Harbor Civil Service Commission, told commissioners on Feb. 5 that the police department “is now fully staffed as of January 20,” after the city hired three officers — two lateral hires and one entry-level recruit.

Costanti said the entry-level officer will begin the police academy next week and that Chief Trey Federici appointed the recent hires. She told the commission the department will close its current vacancy postings and may reopen recruitment later in the year to prepare for one or two anticipated retirements.

Costanti also reported that Lieutenant Fred Douglas, a long-serving officer, announced his retirement nearly a year ago and has about nine working days remaining before he formalizes that retirement. She said Weston King was hired as a lieutenant effective Feb. 2 and is training with Lieutenant Douglas and Lieutenant Daniel. “He will bring a great experience, great perspective,” Costanti said.

A commissioner who attended the induction ceremony praised the event and the turnout, noting the community presence at the swearing-in for the new officers. Costanti said the city council will recognize Lieutenant Douglas and introduce Lieutenant King at its Feb. 23 meeting and invited commissioners to attend.

The commission conducted routine business before and after the update: a commissioner moved to approve previous meeting minutes (the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote), and, with no further business, the commission moved, seconded and adjourned the meeting.
