City Manager Derek Matheson told the Fife City Council on May 26 that staff are preparing outreach and event schedules tied to major local projects and potential tax policy changes.
Matheson said staff will host an in-person forum and an online forum for warehouse businesses that would be affected by a proposed square-footage tax, with sessions targeted for June to collect feedback and answer operational questions. He said the city has met with business groups and stakeholder organizations and is incorporating their input before the public forums.
On infrastructure, Matheson said staff are planning a Port of Tacoma Road phase 2A groundbreaking during the congressional summer recess and are seeking participation from U.S. Sen. Patty Murray, who McMatheson noted had helped secure about $4 million for that project. He also announced a WSDOT SR 167 Phase 2B groundbreaking scheduled for Wednesday in July at 11 a.m. on Valley Avenue in Fife, with Scarcella Brothers identified as the contractor using nearby office space for the project.
Matheson additionally said Pierce County leadership had asked the council to consider a resolution of intent to join a unified regional approach to homelessness; he will seek guidance from the mayor and deputy mayor on when to schedule council consideration.
Council members agreed staff should circulate details and calendar notices for the outreach forums and groundbreakings and requested that delegate and attendance information be clarified for the upcoming Association of Washington Cities meeting.
