Abbot Public Library reports strong summer reading turnout, teen volunteer project and upcoming gallery show

The library reported 213 children enrolled in the summer reading program (2,803 books read total), record adult participation, a teen mitzvah crochet project for preemie toys, and gallery scheduling with a Don Hammontree reception set for Oct. 15.
On Sept. 8 Director Kimberly Grad reported strong summer engagement at the Abbot Public Library, including 213 children enrolled in the Children's Summer Reading Program, 280 free prize books awarded and a total of 2,803 books read by participants. Adult summer reading participation was also described as a record; 150 adult summer-reading cards were ordered, 100 were distributed and 70 were returned.
Director Grad highlighted a teen mitzvah project: a high-school freshman identified as Maya donated 15 crochet kits in August inviting community members to make toy octopuses for preemie babies; as of Aug. 30 three kits remained. The minutes record a brief human-interest moment when a 12-13-year-old patron ran up and hugged staff, saying, "I missed you!"
The minutes also record upcoming gallery schedule changes: Linda Lea Bertram's seascape exhibit closes Sept. 12; Don Hammontree's exhibit will be installed Sept. 13 and run Sept. 22'Oct. 31, with a meet-the-artist reception on Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. Additionally, the library has acquired several GALE databases intended to expand options for middle- and high-school students, including Peterson's Test Prep and several Gale in Context modules (Biography, U.S. History, Science) and Gale Health & Wellness.
Trustees were updated on community programs and upcoming events such as the Friends book sale scheduled for Sept. 20.
