Fife council authorizes 4.5% pay increase for city manager

The Fife City Council approved a 4.5% increase to City Manager Derek Matheson’s annual salary effective Feb. 1, 2026, following a council motion and widespread praise for Matheson’s performance.
Mayor Kim Roscoe introduced the motion and summarized the evaluation process led by consultant Jim Reid, noting "high regard all across the board" for the city manager. Multiple councilmembers offered supportive remarks about Matheson’s communication style, leadership and responsiveness. Councilmember Gathers said she had great trust in the city manager’s work and Deputy Mayor Murphy praised his timely communications responding to incidents and constituent concerns.
Matheson thanked the council and acknowledged staff support: "My family and I appreciate it a lot," he said, and described the city’s leadership team and its roughly 150 employees.
Mayor Roscoe called the question; the council voted and the increase passed unanimously.
