The Abbot Public Library Board of Trustees voted unanimously on Sept. 8 to accept a $14,430 grant from the Shattuck Memorial Fund and to approve a set of related purchases and operational changes presented by Director Kimberly Grad.
Director Kimberly Grad told trustees the grant would be spent on OnBoard Interiors bulletin boards ($6,610), sound-proofing draperies from Simply Windows ($6,567.16) and a Gratnells Makerspace cart from Hertz Furniture ($1,619). The board also approved invoices totaling $3,028.15 to be paid from the override account for items including small bookshelves, tree treatments, plants and a stacking chair dolly.
The board voted to allow the library's Event Center to be scheduled for meetings on Tuesday and Thursday evenings between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., a change the minutes say will take effect once a new part-time custodian is hired. Trustees also declared a list of items surplus under MGL Chapter 30B, including four green cushion-topped benches, an interior awning, a bust of Tennyson, two Human Scale office chairs, and several printers and toner cartridges; the minutes list the items and direct disposition according to town policy.
Trustees approved up to $1,500 for the director's travel to Caldecott award committee meetings in January 2026, to be funded by the Sorenson Fund; the minutes note that books submitted for consideration will be donated to the library.
All of the motions described above passed on unanimous roll-call votes. The transcript does not record who moved or seconded each motion; roll-call tallies list the five trustees present (Gary Amberik, Kathy Barker, David Ross, Marjorie Norman and Kathleen Waslov) voting "Yes" on each action.
The decisions aim to advance the Makerspace and event capabilities while clearing unused equipment from inventory; the minutes record the Pflaster family has already acquired naming rights to a memorial bench and several plaques are being installed. The board's next meeting is scheduled for Oct. 6.
