Mayor Mary Barber proclaimed May 2026 as Bike Month in Gig Harbor at the council meeting on May 11 and presented the proclamation to Marlene Drucker, who addressed the council about benefits of bicycling and local trail improvements.
"I, Mary Barber, mayor of the city of Gig Harbor, do proclaim May 2026 as bike month," Barber read during the meeting, citing bicycling’s health, transportation and tourism benefits and naming local partners that will promote bicycling during May and year‑round. The proclamation named Washington Bikes, Cascade Bicycle Club, the League of American Bicyclists, Pierce County and Bike Harbor as partners in promotional and safety efforts.
Drucker thanked the council and outlined several reasons to celebrate and expand bicycling in Gig Harbor. She said bikes are efficient, increase access for people who cannot drive, and help local businesses because riders "refuel" at coffee shops, bakeries and restaurants. She noted improvements to local trails—citing Cushman Trail extensions and new connections near the recreation center—and contrasted Gig Harbor’s bike‑network score of 22 with Port Townsend’s 68, saying the city has “a ways to go” but that political will can move projects forward.
The mayor and city staff encouraged safe riding and reminded residents of upcoming events tied to mental health awareness and youth programming. The council took no formal action on bicycle policy at the meeting; the proclamation recognizes ongoing community promotions and outreach.
