Committee members at the March 19 meeting outlined plans for branding, art collaborations, and monument concepts to mark Westford’s 300th anniversary.
Chair Ken Tebbetts said he spoke with Paul and secured interest in collaborating with Westford Academy’s Art and History Departments. Dave Christiana offered to follow up with the Art Director and a history teacher to begin developing artwork; the committee hopes to complete material by the end of May for future communications but plans to use Emily Glass’s colorful image for initial announcements.
Members reviewed outreach to other towns for lessons learned. Ming Zhang and Brittany Cannata reported differing progress connecting with Concord and Groton; Groton’s past celebration included a Christmas-tree bonfire and a fundraiser with singer Judy Collins, and its committee emphasized creating a milestone-focused group separate from annual celebrations. Ken asked Seema Pusalker to contact Carlisle as the remaining nearby town not yet approached; Seema agreed to report back in April.
Under new business the committee also discussed collaborations and community requests: local author Leslie Howard asked about sponsorship for a book launch, but the committee said it lacks funds and would consider collaborative programming instead. A distant relative of Willard Hall asked about hosting a family reunion; Ken will propose alternative venues such as Kimball Farm and East Boston Camps. Seema said the DEI Committee invited the Westford 300 committee to participate in a Juneteenth event; she will follow up with contacts to clarify the committee’s role.
On monuments, Dave proposed a Town Hall weathervane, a ground-level historical plaque, and apple-heritage recognition; follow-up tasks include researching existing weathervane information and considering a 2029 time-capsule marker. The committee plans to begin structured fundraising planning and sponsorship discussions at its April meeting.
