Fife council awards $49M interchange contract and $1.5M neighborhood upgrades project

The Fife City Council on April 28 authorized two construction contracts for local infrastructure projects.
City Engineer Dooley reported the city received five bids for the I‑5/Port of Tacoma Road Interchange Phase 2A project on April 10. After evaluation, Dooley said the low, responsive bid of $49,000,000 from Sekante was recommended; Washington Department of Transportation provided concurrence. Council approved Resolution No. 2252 authorizing the city manager to execute the contract; the vote was unanimous.
Dooley also presented Resolution No. 2254 to award the David Court water line, storm drainage and paving upgrades project. Four bids were received on April 9; Dooley said the low responsive bid of $1,500,000 from HCON Inc. was substantially below the engineer’s estimate of $2,100,000. He noted the paving portion of the project ($242,000) will be funded by transportation benefit district dollars, and that the work includes stormwater, waterline and milling/paving of the roadway (no sewer work). Dooley estimated construction could begin in roughly one month and said staff will coordinate with EZ Fiber to avoid conflicts during construction. Council authorized the contract unanimously.
Both resolutions were presented without public opposition in chambers. Staff said they would follow up with a project start date and contractor coordination details.
