Rothschild board approves waste-hauler contract through 2030, directs rate match for 2030

Administrator Ryan VanDeWalle explained the village's current contract for residential garbage and recycling services is due to expire at the end of the year and that Waste Management has proposed an amendment. VanDeWalle said neighboring municipalities have used either a fixed annual increase (commonly 5%) or an annual adjustment tied to a CPI for refuse and recycling; he said Waste Management's current amendment proposal uses a fixed 5% increase to provide predictable budgeting.
The board discussed the proposal and options for procurement. VanDeWalle noted the alternatives under consideration included soliciting new proposals (an RFP) and pursuing joint contracts with neighboring municipalities to seek lower rates. Despite those options, the board approved the motion, which was moved by Sam Stroik and seconded by Bill Schremp and carried 7-0.
The motion as recorded directed approval of the contract through 2030 and specified Waste Management should match Kronenwetter's 2030 rate of $15.56. The motion text in the minutes differs from an earlier staff description that said Waste Management had proposed adding five or seven years (which would have extended the contract through 2031 or 2033); the board-approved term in the motion is 2030.
Next steps noted in the discussion included staff obtaining additional RFPs from other haulers and exploring joint purchasing with neighboring municipalities to compare rates and contract terms. No change to resident billing was specified in the minutes.
