Bolton fire chief reports 49 emergency responses since June; commission approves minutes

Fire Chief Bruce Dixon told the Bolton Fire Commission on July 27, 2020, that the Bolton Volunteer Fire Department (BVFD) answered 49 emergencies since the June meeting, including five motor vehicle accidents (one fatal), multiple tree- and wire-down incidents blocking roadways, mutual-aid responses and numerous medical calls, including one CPR call.
Chairman John Morianos presided over the meeting at the Bolton Fire House. Commissioners Robert Langton and John Roback were present; Cheryl Udin and Chris Moquin were absent. The meeting record shows Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Call, Fire Marshal James Rupert and Deputy Chief Michael Eremita in attendance. The commission approved the June 22 minutes by motion (moved by John Roback, seconded by Robert Langton) and recorded the vote as unanimous.
Chief Dixon said he and Deputy Chief Michael Eremita attended Unified Command meetings in town to coordinate COVID-19 operations and to assess impacts on department procedures. He told the commission that final 2019–2020 fiscal figures had not yet been published and that COVID-19 has already prompted changes to the new fiscal year; staff will provide updates as they develop.
Dixon and Fire Marshal James Rupert also reported recent facility visits: they toured Able Coil’s new facility and the Dean Cabinet site on West Street and met with owners. The department distributed six new Knox Box applications to area businesses.
The commission noted a new storage building has been delivered and placed with assistance from the Highway Department and Deputy Chief Eremita; electronic door locks have been ordered for the storage building and for the fire house rear door. The department also received a new electronic sign and is working on installation logistics, with closure on that project expected in August.
BVFD is finalizing specifications for two capital purchases planned for the coming fiscal year: a first-response EMS vehicle and a replacement for the department’s 20-year-old inflatable boat.
Fire Marshal James Rupert summarized inspection activity. Inspections occurred or were scheduled at Able Coil (837 Boston Turnpike), four churches, three Bolton veterinary clinics, CT Trailor’s, Bolton Motors and Munson’s Candy Kitchen. He said some businesses have minor violations requiring correction but that no large-dollar items were identified. A Temporary Certificate of Occupancy was issued for Old Barrels Boxes and More and the facility was toured by staff. Deputy Fire Marshal Bill Call asked that the June minutes be corrected to note that the landlord at Carpenter Road Apartments replaced two doors.
The meeting record shows there was no old business and no new business. The commission scheduled its next meeting for Sept. 28, 2020 (no meeting in August) and adjourned at 7:41 p.m.; the motion to adjourn (moved by Robert Langton, seconded by John Roback) was recorded as unanimous.
