Police chief reports festival staffing, background check and policy updates

Police Chief David Pernice briefed the Union City Borough Council June 25 on staffing and policy changes at the department and on event coverage plans for the French Creek Festival.
Chief Pernice told council he contacted neighboring departments and learned recent local golf scrambles raised about $16,000 in Corry and about $18,000–$20,000 in Warren as part of context on event fundraising. He said Erie County Detectives will fund overtime and supply two to three officers from the Erie County Courthouse to supplement festival coverage; he has also requested increased coverage from Corry PSP but had not received a response by the meeting.
Pernice said he is completing a background check required by Civil Service rules and expects it to be finished by July 5, 2024. He also reported working with Lexipol to update department policies and removing policies no longer needed; those changes are pending solicitor review before final adoption.
Mayor Robert Wolf thanked Chief Pernice and Officer Shelly for effective traffic enforcement, noting positive community feedback. The council took no formal action on police policy changes during the meeting and deferred solicitor review where required.
