The Mount Olive Board of Commissioners on Sept. 8 approved a contract for CPA Beverly Stroud to reconcile bank statements and bring the town's financial records current for the fiscal period July 2024 through June 2025.
Commissioner Delreese Simmons told the board he had not been briefed on the CPA contract before the vote. Commissioner Danny Keel moved approval and Mayor Pro-Tempore Barbara Kornegay seconded. The motion passed 4-1; the minutes record Simmons as the sole opposing vote.
Separately, the board approved a proclamation recognizing Greg Wiggins for his years of service (Action Memo 09-22), moved the Nov. 3, 2025 meeting to Nov. 10, 2025 because of elections (Action Memo 09-23), and confirmed the sale of a 2024 Freightliner M2 106 grapple truck for $164,000 (Action Memo 09-24). When the truck sale was discussed, Commissioner Tommy Brown said the vehicle "should never have been purchased," and Commissioner Delreese Simmons questioned how much the town originally paid and warned the town could lose $30,000–$50,000 on the sale. Interim Town Manager Glenn Holland said the $164,000 figure was at the high end of an appraisal and cited operational reasons for selling the truck, including multiple trips to the landfill.
The board also noted that the Office of the State Auditor's report of findings has been posted to the town website and that the town posted its responses publicly.
Outcome and next steps: The CPA contract (Action Memo 09-21) was approved 4-1; other listed measures passed unanimously. Staff will proceed with contract execution and continue to post audit-related materials and meeting notices on the town website.
