The Township Committee authorized Newton Animal Control to perform a trap-neuter-release (TNR) program at a cat colony located at 52 Hampton House Road.
Township Clerk/Administrator Diana Juarez told the Committee last year's animal-control expenses exceeded the $5,000 budget by about $7,000; the 2026 budgeted animal-control line was increased to $10,000 with $2,800 already expended year-to-date. Committeewoman Eileen Klose asked whether rabies vaccines would be provided free by the State and questioned a reported $10-per-cat charge; the Committee discussed timing and logistics of free clinics and noted free-vaccine programs have limits. The Committee expressed concern that the colony is at least ten cats and that total TNR costs could exceed $1,000.
The motion to authorize Newton Animal Control passed with Committeewoman Klose voting yes, Committeeman D. Hansen abstaining and Committeeman E. Ramm voting no.
