Resident urges Bernalillo council to address safety, lack of sidewalks on Sheriff Posse Road

"There's SO much traffic, especially during the rush hours," he said, adding that neighbors walking to nearby businesses must "cut through the weeds" because there is nowhere safe to walk. He also noted higher property taxes in the area and said residents contribute significant revenue that should support maintenance and safety improvements.
The comment came during the meeting’s public-comment period and was the primary citizen concern aired to the council that night. Leyba said he is willing to assist the town in planning improvements and asked council members to consider the issue on a future agenda.
The council did not take formal action during the meeting on Sheriff Posse Road; no staff report, funding commitment or timeline for improvements was announced. Council members approved routine items later in the meeting, including hiring a new police officer and approving the accounts-payable list.
A next step would typically be a staff evaluation or a request for a formal agenda item so the council can consider options such as sidewalks, shoulders, traffic-calming measures or a revised traffic study. The town did not set a date for such follow-up during the Feb. 10 meeting.
