Courthouse expansion nearing completion; county sets August ribbon-cutting

County project staff and contractors updated the Board of Commissioners on June 1 about progress at the courthouse expansion and remodel. Contractors reported progress in the 1977 section of the building — the basement hearing-room move, additional restrooms, and a Level 1 courtroom conversion — and said ceiling grid and painting were complete. Temporary modular entrances were removed, and crews are finishing punch-list items ahead of project closeout.
Staff reported the project is 88% complete as of invoices through the end of March, with owner and contractor contingencies available to absorb several change orders currently in process. Contractor contingency items in review total several $100,000s; staff said they expect to use a significant portion of contingency funds to finish remodel work and address issues discovered during construction.
The project team said a ribbon-cutting and grand opening is targeted for Aug. 14, subject to final closeout. Staff acknowledged ongoing stormwater and minor roof repairs at the rear of the courthouse but said recent heavy rain validated most design elements.
Why it matters: The remodel adds courtroom space and jury assembly capacity and returns hearing functions to a more visible, accessible first-floor location while addressing deferred maintenance.
Next steps: Contractors will continue baseline construction and punch-list work over the next 4–6 weeks; staff will provide a budget update at the next board meeting and bring any contract closeout items for board review as needed.
