The Atlantic Beach City Commission unanimously approved Resolution 24‑54 on Oct. 14 asking Duval County Public Schools to reconfigure the Atlantic Beach Elementary attendance zone to include all residences in the city.
Commissioner Ring described prior advocacy at the school board and said the resolution aims to present a collective city request to the district. He and other commissioners said drawing all Atlantic Beach residences into the school’s attendance zone could increase enrollment toward capacity and help keep the school off potential closure lists.
Commissioners and the mayor emphasized that the resolution is a formal request to the school district, not a unilateral rezoning. Mayor Curtis Ford noted the school’s fall enrollment numbers — "we actually had slightly over 500 students" earlier in the year and were "somewhat south of 500 right now" — and said bringing West Atlantic Beach students (including Marsh Oaks) into the school zone could help close that gap.
The commission voted unanimously to approve the resolution and asked staff and elected representatives to advance the request with the school district.
