Contractor says $31,500 renewal fee on Good Shepherd Village project is excessive; board to review

During the public comment portion of the June 5 meeting, Jim Shea of William H. Lane Contracting said his client, Good Shepherd Village, was being charged a $31,500 renewal fee for a construction project that was roughly 75% complete. Shea said the original permit fee had been about $25 and that local practice in neighboring municipalities was to charge little or no renewal fee; he urged Town officials to reconsider so the project would not have to cut work from its budget.
Shea said the project began one week after the permit was granted and that the renewal charge would be borne by Good Shepherd Village, not the contractor. He provided a letter to the Board documenting the request and asked for an accelerated decision. "We paid the original fee which was fair," Shea said, and described the renewal charge as inconsistent with Chapter 86.16 of the Town Code as he read it.
Town Attorney Alan J. Pope said the Board had received Shea's letter and that Councilman Frank Bertoni was absent due to a family death; the Town would review the submission at a special meeting next week when all board members could consider it. No immediate vote was taken.
