Seward County authorizes agreement with Nebraska DOT for I‑80 improvements, temporary county road closures

The Seward County Board of Commissioners on June 2 authorized the chair to sign an agreement with the Nebraska Department of Transportation for Project No. NH-80-8(110), which will improve approximately 9.64 miles of Interstate 80 from the Pleasant Dale interchange to the Seward interchange and require temporary closures of Seward County Roads 294th, 266th, 224th, 210th and 182nd where they cross I-80. The motion passed by an affirmative vote of Darrell Zabrocki, Ken Schmieding, Raegan Hain and Chairperson Misty Ahmic (4-0); one member was absent.

Jon Regnier, Seward County Highway Superintendent, briefed the board on the state agreement and said the state’s proposed detour routes are all state highways but warned that detours and traffic shifts could still increase wear and maintenance needs on county roads. He urged the board to be mindful of potential additional costs and maintenance demands arising from diverted traffic during construction.

Board members discussed the potential for increased local traffic and maintenance obligations. No dollar amount for county maintenance commitments was specified in the discussion; the board’s action was to authorize the chair to execute the state agreement rather than to appropriate county funds during the meeting.

The authorization allows county staff to finalize and sign the agreement with NDOT so the state can proceed with the I-80 improvement project and associated temporary county road closures. The board did not set a follow-up hearing date at the meeting; implementation details and any county-level maintenance agreements will be addressed by staff as they arise.
