Board members on June 1 spent extended time addressing MJ Electric’s request to extend tenancy on airport land near the new taxi lane and resolved several practical issues required for short-term continuation.
Randy (speaker 2) described options after learning a farmer’s irrigation equipment encroaches on the leased area, leaving only about six inches of clearance. Staff evaluated alternative sites (Gate 10, Gate 11, Gate 3) and concluded Gate 3 is the most workable short-term option though not ideal for long-term tenancy because of traffic and retention concerns. The board instructed Roger to speak with the farmer (Mr. Knapp) to determine when irrigation will start and to relay a firm timeline to MJ Electric; Randy said he will ask MJ Electric to coordinate with Dustin if they want to remain.
Separately, because a contractor staging area at Gate 3 could become a mud pit before the airport’s airshow, staff proposed spreading asphalt millings to create a temporary parking/ticketing surface. The board moved to authorize a change order for Milestone to spread the millings, with the amendment that the airshow committee would cover any costs beyond the contract scope. That amended motion passed.
Board members emphasized safety concerns (traffic on County Road 42 when school is in session), lease limits, and the need to avoid taking additional farmland from the current lessee. The board did not adopt a long-term lease change at the meeting but directed staff to continue discussions and seek written commitments where appropriate.
