Sheriff’s office recognizes grants, school SPO contracts and ballistic vest award

Washington County’s Public Safety Committee on May 26 recognized multiple sheriff-related awards and contracts, approved four Special Patrol Officer (SPO) school contracts and forwarded a budget amendment for ballistic vests.
Sheriff Jeff Murphy asked the committee to recognize a $37,000 Canal Corporation patrol grant to pay deputies’ salaries for boat and bicycle patrols along the canal; the committee adopted the motion to recognize the grant. Mr. Rozell moved recognition; Messrs. O’Brien and Hahn seconded.
The committee approved four SPO contracts with local school districts—Hudson Falls, Greenwich, Granville and Fort Edward—after the Sheriff reported those districts had approved the agreements; five additional schools had agreed in principle and were awaiting school-board sign-off. Mr. O’Brien moved the SPO-contract motion, which Mr. Hahn seconded and the committee adopted.
Sheriff Murphy said the department received a five-year Byrne Memorial supplemental award of $35,000 toward ballistic vests (the award covers roughly half the vests the department needs) and the committee approved the award and forwarded the related budget amendment to the Finance Committee.
Murphy also told the committee the department received the Dorothea Dix Award—the first law-enforcement recipient noted in the minutes—after referring more than 500 people to mental-health services over the last three years. He said Building B security was scheduled for the Health and Human Services Committee the next day for consideration of increased security at the main entrance.
