Trustees authorize application for DEC volunteer fire assistance grant

The Horseheads Board of Trustees voted Nov. 7 to authorize the village manager and fire chief to submit an application for the New York State Volunteer Fire Assistance (VFA) grant. Manager Nathan Nagel and Fire Chief Ryan Miller told the board the department plans to request nearly the VFA maximum so the project will total just under $5,000; the VFA would reimburse 50% (up to $2,500) and the village would provide the remaining match from the budget and contingency funds.
Chief Miller said requested equipment includes wildland personal protective equipment (hard hats, leather gloves, safety glasses, ear protection), forestry hose and nozzles, and a pump (the pump purchase was already budgeted but increasing eligible items would maximize reimbursement). The clerk read a resolution that authorized the application and designated chief Wheeler and manager Nagel to be responsible for compliance if awarded. Trustees approved the resolution by roll call and directed staff to submit the application before the Nov. 15 deadline.
What’s next: Manager and the fire department will finalize the application and return if the grant is awarded to confirm budget adjustments and compliance reporting.
