West Deer awards demolition, planning contracts; approves hires and labor MOU

During its Dec. 18 meeting the West Deer Township Board of Supervisors took several procurement and personnel actions.
Bids for asbestos abatement and demolition of the former municipal building at 109 E. Union Rd. were opened; the low asbestos abatement bid of $8,200 from Kane Specialty Group, LLC and the low demolition bid of $28,750 from Deller Professional Services, Inc. were awarded by unanimous vote. Supervisors discussed site restoration (backfill, grade, reseed) and whether the site might later be converted to parking; Mrs. Jordan asked that the Board revisit site-use options at next month’s meeting. Township Manager Daniel Mator noted the grant supporting the work also covered dog-shelter renovation and said he was confident funding would remain even if scope changes occurred.
The Board also awarded facilitation of a joint comprehensive plan with Indiana Township to Pashek + MTR for $124,585, contingent on Indiana Township’s participation and equal funding; Mr. Shook noted Pashek + MTR provided a detailed timeline and proposed a March–April meeting schedule to collect supervisors’ input. The motion to award the contract carried unanimously.
On personnel, Chief Robert Loper submitted letters of resignation from part‑time officers Michael Seefeld, Cory Newman and Evan Koren; the Board accepted the resignations and expressed well wishes. The Board approved hiring Zachary Herbinko and Brian Johns as part‑time police officers by unanimous vote.
Finally, the Board authorized signing a Memorandum of Understanding with Teamsters Local Union No. 205 to extend the secretarial labor agreement through 2025; the motion passed 4–1 with Supervisor Wiegand voting no.
