Colleton County council appoints members to boards, hears veterans and Fire Rescue updates

The clerk reported ballots for multiple vacancies: two seats on the Colleton County Planning Commission (applicants Willis Hans and John Rogers), one seat on the Edison River Canoe and Kayak Trail Committee (Gary Herman), three seats on the Colleton County Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse (including applicant Jessica Grayson), and one applicant for five seats on the Colleton County Accommodations Tax Advisory Board (Scott Grooms). The council moved to accept the appointments.
Clint Farrell, commander of Colleton County VFW Post 12102, asked for help finding a permanent meeting place for the post and described recent community service: "We collected nearly 1,150 pounds of non perishable food along with $660 in cash and donation," he said, and added the post had donated more than $11,200 to the community, roughly $6,600 of which went to veterans in need.
Nate Knox, introduced as a representative of the county veterans council, said the county is building a veterans park at the airport and that a grand opening is planned on Veterans Day. A Council of Governments representative (identified as Hank) summarized how the county’s $60,000 contribution leverages regional projects and said the COG brings federal funding and services including senior services and home repairs.
Council members also publicly recognized Fire Rescue staff and volunteer partners for recent emergency-preparedness events and expressed condolences after two recent traumatic incidents in the county. A council member thanked Casey Campbell and department staff "for doing a lot of the heavy lifting" to arrange outreach events and urged residents to check smoke detectors and consider swim-safety lessons offered by the county.
Next steps: The veterans park grand opening was described as planned for Veterans Day; appointment records will be entered into county files and any implementation steps for park construction or Fire Rescue programs will proceed through the appropriate county departments.
