Alexander County’s consolidated Health & Human Services meeting on June 1 included updates from the health department, the Department of Social Services and the senior center.
Health Director Billy Walker reviewed organizational needs (open advisory-board seats and clinical positions), accreditation revisions, and a child‑fatality-prevention report covering five 2024 deaths. Walker said the department distributed protective equipment, provided helmets through the Safe Kids Coalition and will bring required policy updates to the board at a later meeting.
Trina Riddle, economic services program administrator at DSS, summarized state and federal changes that will affect Medicaid and SNAP. She said HR1 will limit noncitizen Medicaid coverage to emergency services beginning October 2026 and will introduce work and community‑engagement requirements for some MXP (expanded‑Medicaid) recipients in January 2027. Riddle reported there are 2,446 MXP recipients in Alexander County and that DSS is adjusting staffing to meet new certfication and workload requirements.
Christy Hunt, senior‑center director, reported staff changes, increased program participation (including 109 survey respondents and around 132 at a recent senior celebration), multiple successful events and upcoming activities such as a blood drive and summer concerts.
Next steps: Health‑department accreditation updates and required agreement addenda will return to the board for formal action; DSS will continue training on upcoming state rules and provide updates as guidance becomes available.
