Rothschild approves up to $110,875 contract for crushing reclaimed street material

Public Works Administrator Timothy Vergara told the board the village has crushed reclaimed street materials periodically (2011, 2013, 2017, 2021) and that the current stockpile of reclaimed base course is low while the reclamation pile has grown.

Vergara said the village issued a Request for Proposals on Aug. 7, 2024 to five companies for crushing services and received a single bid from James Peterson Sons, Inc. Based on the village’s estimate, the projected cost for crushing is $70,875. Vergara recommended an additional allocation of about $40,000 to cover boulder crushing and production of riprap (8"–12") and breaker run (4"–6"), for an approximate total not to exceed $110,875. He proposed funding the work from 2024–2025 borrowed streets funds and asked that all crushing be completed by Dec. 20, 2024.

The board approved a motion by Trustee Rex Zemke, seconded by Trustee Dan Mortensen, to accept the James Peterson Sons, Inc. proposal not to exceed $110,875, with funding from the 2024–2025 borrowed streets funds. A roll-call vote recorded six ayes, including newly appointed Village President Dan Helgeson; the motion carried unanimously.

Why it matters: Approving the crushing contract replenishes a key local source of crushed base material for village road reconstruction projects and authorizes a predictable funding source, helping avoid ad hoc procurement during winter months.

What happens next: Public Works will oversee the contract and complete crushing by Dec. 20, 2024; the village will use the material on reconstruction projects except where WisDOT funding rules require otherwise.
