The board approved a motion by Trustee Dan Mortensen, seconded by Trustee Bill Schremp, to appoint Helgeson; the roll-call vote was 6-0.
The board also agreed on a process to fill a separate trustee vacancy. The board authorized staff to advertise the open trustee seat on the village Facebook page and the village website immediately, with the application window to close at 11:00 a.m. on Sept. 20, 2024, and directed staff to schedule candidate interviews either during a regular meeting or at a special board meeting. The motion to advertise and set the deadline carried 6-0.
Why it matters: The appointment fills a leadership gap created when Village President George Peterson retired. The board’s advertised appointment process will allow public applications and interviews before the board votes on a replacement trustee, maintaining an open, documented selection process.
What happens next: Staff will accept applications through Sept. 20 and will present candidates for interview in open session as directed by the board. A subsequent board vote will determine who fills the trustee seat until April 2026.
