At its Sept. 17 meeting the Village Board approved several administrative and operational measures affecting public safety, facilities and staffing.
Traffic calming: The board authorized the Village Clerk-Treasurer to request the Town of Ramapo install MUTCD-approved warning signs (W2-2 eastbound; W16-8P and W16-9P) on Montebello Road west of Windermere Brook Lane after the Village Engineer reported minimal sight distance and safety concerns. Residents voiced requests: Bob Heltzer asked for a sign that reads "slow down," Sam Moeller said cars are speeding and suggested speed humps or stop signs, and Sherman Farber said it is difficult to pull out of Windermere Brook Lane. Village Attorney Warren E. Berbit reminded the public that stop signs are not appropriate as speed-control devices under MUTCD rules.
Pond 6 emergency replacement: The Village Engineer recommended awarding The Pond and Lake Connection a contract to replace a vandalized fountain and aerator at Pond 6. The company’s proposal dated July 16, 2025, totaled $17,849; the board authorized repairs not to exceed $19,000 and noted an insurance claim should cover all but $5,000.
Personnel and property: The board authorized the creation of a full-time Building Inspector position with an estimated annual salary of $80,000 to assist the Building Department with plan reviews and applications. Trustees also approved leasing the top floor of the Montebello Community Center to Hi-Tech Security Services, Inc. under terms that start Oct. 1, 2025, at $1,250/month (year one), rising to $1,287.50/month in year two, and a $2,500 security deposit due Oct. 15, 2025; tenant pays internet and cable and may occupy early to install services.
Appointments and claims: Trustees accepted the resignation of Planning Board member Ariel Aufgang (effective June 16, 2025) and appointed Nancy Doon to serve until April 2028. The board approved abstracts and schedules of claims, including a General Abstract totaling $813,321.08, Professional Fees totaling $12,542.95 and an LOC Draw Fund of $2,164.40.
Next steps include publication of contract awards and lease documents as prepared by the Village Attorney, and coordination with the Town of Ramapo for sign installation.
