County updates: high‑voltage transmission lines announced, veterans transition center opening, downtown building damage under review

County Manager Dr. Ledbetter reported several items to the board on June 1.
He said the Georgia Transmission Authority has notified the county of two transmission‑line projects that will cross Spalding County: a 500 kilovolt line from the south and a 230 kilovolt line from the north, both anticipated to connect near the Tomachee substation. Ledbetter said the authority is responsible for contacting property owners on affected routes and that the county has no control over routing or condemnation decisions.
Ledbetter also announced a grand opening for the Veterans Transition Center (formerly Hanweiner) at 10 a.m. on June 6 and invited the public. Separately, he presented photographs and an engineer’s assessment of structural damage at 117 East Solomon Street: heavy rain caused a partial roof collapse, bowed framing and displaced trusses, and engineers recommended removing the building’s facade for safety while they complete a full assessment. Staff are working on mitigation steps ahead of downtown events including June Jam.
Deputy County Manager added that GDOT funds for airport acquisition properties have been received and staff are coordinating with the City of Griffin to reconcile and return funds to the general fund before fiscal year end.
