Scotland County endorses hosting regional NHANES mobile exam center

The Scotland County Board of Health voted unanimously on April 6 to allow Health and Human Services Director Amanda Holland to proceed with plans to host the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES), a CDC program that conducts community interviews and mobile clinical exams for a nationally representative sample.
Holland told the board NHANES selects communities to represent the U.S. population and sends invitation letters to randomly selected residents. Eligible participants complete an in-person interview and a mobile exam at a Mobile Exam Center; Holland said the total on-site time is roughly two hours and that participants receive modest compensation. Holland said NHANES will not share individual test results with anyone other than the participant; participants may choose to share results with their primary care provider.
Vice Chair O'Neal supported moving forward, saying the county's regional location could bring additional people into Laurinburg and provide economic benefit. The Health and Human Services Advisory Committee reviewed the proposal and recommended endorsement; Holland said endorsement materials including an endorsement letter and photographs were included in the board packet.
The board's authorization allows Holland and staff to coordinate with NHANES representatives on logistics and community outreach. Holland said the county expects no direct cost and that NHANES provides reimbursement for participation-related expenses. The board took no additional action beyond the endorsement.
The department will report planning updates to the Board of Health in future meetings.
