Jericho DEI Committee hears public comment, plans outreach and accessibility reviews

Chelsea Page, a member of the public, opened the May 11 session with an update about an informational event at her church hosted by Friends of Standing-Together and invited committee members to attend. The committee discussed whether to host informational events in Jericho for residents interested in similar work; the conversation referenced earlier efforts by Rev. Page to circulate an anti-apartheid community petition, but the committee neither endorsed nor opposed that petition and received no request for support at this meeting.
The committee discussed future community-engagement activities, agreeing that any book groups should pick a specific focus and choose titles intentionally; they considered a Young Adult book as a way to attract families and high-school–aged children. Beth Esmond will consult local librarians about books related to voting rights.
Members briefly reviewed progress on the Mills River trail accessibility initiative and considered whether to pursue similar projects elsewhere. Maria Rinaldi summarized efforts to support mail-in voting as an accessibility issue and the group agreed to examine the agendas and minutes of other town committees to identify DEI-related items that might require attention.
Wendy Verrei will facilitate the committee's next meeting on June 1. The May 11 meeting adjourned at approximately 8:30 p.m.
