Robert Fiume, executive director of the Luzerne County Transportation Authority, presented a proposed microtransit system to the Newport Township Board of Commissioners at the Aug. 5 meeting and said anticipated implementation would begin in October 2024. A question-and-answer session followed the presentation; Fiume said the authority will schedule more public meetings to discuss details and gather local input.
The board received the presentation as part of its regular agenda; no formal vote on the microtransit plan was recorded at the meeting. The presentation is an early step in a transportation planning process that would affect local mobility options and require further public engagement and operational planning before service begins.
Mr. Fiume noted the LCTA intends additional public outreach, and township staff indicated follow-up meetings would be coordinated with county transport officials.
