Life Scout’s bench project approved for Wanamie Recreation Park trail

The Newport Township Board of Commissioners on July 1, 2024 unanimously approved an Eagle Scout project proposed by Life Scout Joseph Holocheck of Troop 418 to install park benches along the walking trail at Wanamie Recreation Park.
Holocheck told the board the project would place two benches — one on each side of the trail — with an additional bench possible at the far end of the trail if fundraising permits. The benches, supplies, labor and project management will be provided at no cost to Newport Township; labor will be supplied by members of Troop 418 and family members. Holocheck said any funds raised but not used for the bench project would be provided to the recreation committee for future endeavors.
Commissioner Deborah Forgach‑Zaleski moved to approve the project; Commissioner John Vishnefski seconded. Commissioner John Zyla commended Holocheck for his presentation and the board voted 5‑0 to approve.
"Please consider approving this proposal for the betterment of Newport Township and Residents," Holocheck wrote in his submission to the board and presented during public comment.
The meeting record does not list a construction schedule or installation date. The recreation committee and township staff will coordinate next steps once the troop finalizes scheduling.
