Princeton council approves Emerson Street closure for jail demolition staging

The Princeton City Council on June 1 voted to close the 100 block of East Emerson Street from Main Street to Prince Street to allow county contractors to stage demolition of the old jail.
Clint, a city staff member who described the contract to the council, said the contractor expects to begin staging around July 10 and the contract requires completion by Dec. 31. "They're saying, like, mid July. I think July 10," Clint said. He told council the parking lot will remain accessible to employees but staging will occupy the roadway.
The closure request came from the county commissioners; Council action authorizes the temporary closure for the dates described and asks the contractor to post a bond to cover any road damage and to repair the road at project completion. The council voted by voice to approve the motion after a second by Bruce.
The council did not record individual roll-call votes in the transcript; staff said the project has a contract completion date of Dec. 31 and that the city will release any bond after the work is finished and inspected.
Next steps: the city will coordinate signage, staging limits and bonding requirements with the county and the awarded contractor, and staff said they will ask the contractor to bond the road as was done during initial jail construction.
